چکیده

Discussing the relationship of mathematics to chemistry is closely related to the emergence of physical chemistry and of quantum chemistry. We argue that, perhaps, the most significant issue that the ‘mathematization of chemistry’ has historically raised is not so much methodological, as it is philosophical: the discussion over the ontological status of theoretical entities which were introduced in the process. A systematic study of such an approach to the mathematization of chemistry may, perhaps, contribute to the realist/antirealist debate. To this end, in this paper we briefly discuss Lewis’ introduction of fugacity and activity to his chemical thermodynamics and more fully analyze the issues surrounding the appropriation of resonance by Linus Pauling into quantum chemistry, particularly as these issues arose in organic chemistry as discussed by George W. Wheland.

Theoretical study of tetrahedrane derivatives

Tetrahedrane is most strained and the smallest cage compound. It attracts organic chemists because ofits unusual bonding nature and highly symmetrical structure. However, many efforts to isolate theparent tetrahedrane have been unsuccessful because of the high reactivity and very short lifetimecaused by the strain in this molecule. Modeling of molecules for determination of structuralproperties...

Quantitative Structure-Property Relationship to Predict Quantum Properties of Monocarboxylic Acids By using Topological Indices

Abstract. Topological indices are the numerical value associated with chemical constitution purporting for correlation of chemical structure with various physical properties, chemical reactivity or biological activity. Graph theory is a delightful playground for the exploration of proof techniques in Discrete Mathematics and its results have applications in many areas of sciences. A graph is a ...

Tutorial Review: Simulation of Oscillating Chemical Reactions Using Microsoft Excel Macros

Oscillating reactions are one of the most interesting topics in chemistry and analytical chemistry. Fluctuations in concentrations of one the reacting species (usually a reaction intermediate) create an oscillating chemical reaction. In oscillating systems, the reaction is far from thermodynamic equilibrium. In these systems, at least one autocatalytic step is required. Developing an instinctiv...

In Chemists ’ Guide to Effective Teaching ,

The discussion of models and modeling in this chapter is based, in part, on the results of research on students’ understanding of quantum mechanics (Gardner, 2002) and research designed to probe students’ ability to visualize the rotation of organic molecules (Briggs, 2004). Our perspective on models and modeling has also been influenced by work in both physics education (Halloun, 1996) and mat...

Crowded Charges in Ion Channels

Ions in water are the liquid of life. Life occurs almost entirely in 'salt water'. Water itself (without ions) is lethal to animal cells and damaging for most proteins. Water must contain the right ions in the right amounts if it is to sustain life. Physical chemistry is the language of electrolyte solutions. Physical chemistry and biology are intertwined. Physical chemists and biologists come ...
